MSI TO RELEASE NETBOOK BASED ON THE PINE TRAIL ATOM

MSI will release a touchscreen netbook based on Intel’s next generation Pine Trail Atom platform. Intel has not yet launched the Pine Trail but is expected to do so before the end of this year.

MSI hopes to be the first to release products based on this platform and the first MSI product based on this will be the proposed 10 inch convertible U150. This netbook will run on the Windows 7 platform.

The Pine Trail generation of Atom processors will have CPU blended with GPU on the same chip. This arrangement is expected to improve the graphics performance and reduce the power consumption.

The MSI convertible will have a resistive touchscreen. While it is expected to deliver a good performance, the lack of a capacitive screen with multi-touch capabilities will prevent it from making use of Windows 7’s Touch Pack applications.

CHERRYPAL BING - CLOUD BASED MINI LAPTOP

CherryPal launched its new netbook at the Colarado's Sundance Film Festival of all places. May be it couldn't make it to the CES or wanted some different setting, who knows, but CherryPal which is well known for its Cloud based nettop has decided to venture into the netbook market with its Bing Netbook which is also Cloud based. CherryPal claims that the Bing is the fastest, most affordable and the least power consuming Intel Atom N270 based netbook on the market.

The CherryPal Bing packs 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, 1GB of RAM, 160GB of Hard Disk storage capacity, WiFi 802.11b/g connectivity, 3 USB ports, and SD/MMC/MS card slot. It has a 10.2-inch TFT display with 1024 x 600 pixels, widescreen and a 1.3 Megapixel Webcam. The CherryPal Bing runs on the company's exclusive GreenMaraschino Linux Operating System with OpenOffice, Firefox, media software and instant messaging systems like AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Google and Skype. The Bing netbook can also support other Windows OS. Though CherryPal claims a battery life of 5 hours, details on the battery itself is unavailable and it weighs 3lbs.

Although the pricing of the Bing is still unknown, CherryPal has announced a limited time offer of 2 for 1. Yes, now you can pick the Bing along with a CherryPal C114 nettop for a combo price of just $399. The Bing is expected to be shipped in March 2009 while the C114 is available now. The nettop alone is normally priced at $250 and this combo offer is definitely worth watching out for. The CherryPal C114 uses 400MHz Freescale MIPS based processor running a custom version of Xubuntu Linux. Though the C114 does not support Windows, it is compact and performs well with cloud based applications like Zoho Office or Google Docs. To top it all, the CherryPal official site says that, “Coming soon is yet another laptop/netbook, based on a different processor architecture that will provide even more power savings”.
