DELL VOSTRO A90 WITH UBUNTU FOR $184

Black Friday is just around the corner and shopping deals have already started pouring in. Dell has put its Vostro A90 on sale for just $184. This version of the netbook runs Ubuntu 8.04, but it could have been nicer if Dell used Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix.

The Vostro A90 doesn’t have any fancy specifications. It is a basic netbook with an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM and an 8GB solid state drive. The 8.9 inch LCD display comes with 1024 x 600 pixels. Other notable features include WiFi 802.11b/g.

If you think the 8GB storage isn’t sufficient to meet your needs, you can upgrade to the 16GB SSD by paying an additional $50. Windows isn’t available as an option, but you wouldn’t have much difficulty installing it via a USB key.

UBUNTU 9.10 UTILITY TO CONTROL CLOCK SPEED OF ATOM PROCESSORS

The Ubuntu 9.10 has been released with a number of netbook-friendly features including the optional Ubuntu Netbook Remix user interface. Ubuntu is a popular version of Linux specifically optimized for netbooks running on Intel Atom processors such as Asus Eee PC. The only major problem with this OS is that it doesn’t allow users to easily adjust the clock speed of Intel Atom processors. But the issue seems to have been solved by a third party utility.

Called eee-control, the application is optimized for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. It has been tested on Eee PC 901 and is expected to work with all Atom powered netbooks running on Ubuntu 9.10.

UBUNTU 9.10 DUE TO BE RELEASES ON OCTOBER 29

PC makers favor hitching their project to large Linux distributions because they get the freedom to develop optimizations for low screen resolutions, low power processors, and other hardware used in netbooks. Ubuntu Linux is one such popular version of Linux specifically optimized for netbooks running on Intel Atom processors such as Asus Eee PC.

Eeebuntu is a customized version of Ubuntu and enjoys a huge fan base among the netbook user community. One of the major problems faced by this project is that it has to keep itself updated whenever a new version of Ubuntu arrives. And Ubuntu is known for releasing a major update every six months. Their latest update is due to be released on October 29 and PC users who have installed Eeebuntu on their computer may find it incompatible due to errors in Ubuntu 9.10’s Intel display drivers. Eeebuntu developers say that the Ubuntu 9.10 is full of problems that could affect the functionality of netbooks. They say that things that worked just fine in Ubuntu 8.10 are no longer working in 9.10.
