Airport security has been tightened drastically as a result of the terrorist attacks in the United States. Get to the airport 2 or 3 hours earlier than usual. In preparation for security checks at the airport, use the "suspend" mode (Windows) as an alternative to make sure your battery has enough power to boot up. Activate the suspend mode during the last time you use your laptop before leaving to the airport. It will restart quickly and without consuming battery power, leaving the option of maximum battery charge if you need to work during the flight. (For Mac Notebooks, it is the "sleep" mode)
X-ray machines used at airports are not a threat to your Notebook’s hard-drive. However, the security checkpoint conveyer belt is a target for bag lifters. As a result you may want to have a security guard hand check your machine rather than putting it through the conveyer.
