INTEL CLAIMS NO PROBLEMS WITH THEIR SSD

Appearantly Intel was not happy by the findings of PC PERspective's test results yesterday and has no claimed that there is nothing wrong with their SSD's. Further more Intel claims that:

the synthetic workloads they use to stress the drive are not reflective of real world use," . the benchmarks they used to evaluate performance do not represent what a PC user experiences.

We're not 100% sure why Intel is so angry but we would think that it has something to do with the fact that the drives are overpriced and that according to many the technology is still experimental. Either way we're betting that the pandering will go on until Intel finally decides to cave in and release a firm ware update to the drives.

What do you think?

ARE SSD'S WORTH THEIR HIGH PRICE

You've seen the word before, SSD or HDD options. And maybe you own that well coveted SSD option on your current laptop. But if you're in the market for a new system and are not sure what an SSD is than let me give you a crash course on whether you should or should not buy it.

SSD stands for Solid State Drive and as the name suggests it does not contain any moving parts unlike its HDD relative which uses a spinning disk to operate. I would love to go into a long discussion as to the pros and cons but since you'd probably be bored half way through I'm going to hit you with the facts straight up.

PROS

Faster operating speeds. Because there are no disk to spin a solid state drive can operate at faster speeds than their hard disk counterparts.

Nearly Indestructible Data: This is not to tell you that if you throw your new netbook down the Grand Canyon you can waltz down there and pick up the pieces and find your SSD in tack. But it does mean that if you should accidentally drop it due to carelessness or some other mishap, you don't have to worry about losing your precious data.

Better Power Management: SSD offer much better battery life than HDD options. Not only do they eat up less battery juices they also cause the system to run smoother because that continuous spinning is gone which can generate a lot of heat.

CONS:

More Expensive: SSD options are considerably more expensive than their HDD counterparts. This is mainly because they are a new technology and like all new tech takes a while to drop in prices.

Less Disk Space: Generally speaking SSD options contain considerably less disk space than their HDD counterparts. Case in point is a 32GB SSD would cost the same as an 80GB HDD. Or an 80GB SDD costs round about the same as a 160GB HDD.

CONCLUSION:

If multitasking is your thing and you have the extra cash than SSD is your answer. But for those who do casual web surfing and document editing, the high prices of solid state drives are too much to offset the little performance gains we could have. In the end though its a matter of choice. Just note that the price you are paying today for an SSD option, a year later you will get double or triple the space for the same mullah.

SAMSUNG TARGETS THE NETBOOK’S FOR THEIR COST-EFFICIENT SSD’S

Samsung SSDTargeted at low-priced transportable PCs, the low-density SSDs from the house of Samsung will attribute an SATA II interface for some speedy transfer rates. Samsung has presently proclaimed that it has started sampling low-density; high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) which are 70% less significant when evaluated to customary 2.5" SSDs. Samsung maintains that these are extremely cost-efficient to produce and expects their novel SSD offerings to be an eye-catching substitute for presented HDDs in low-cost PCs. These low-density Samsung SSDs employ the similar high-performance SATA II controller technology as that being utilized on Samsung's just launched MLC-based 128GB SSD.

The 32GB version of new-fangled SSD lineup will interpret data (successively) at 90MB/s and inscribe it (successively) at 70MB/s. The 16GB reads at 90MB/s and writes at 45MB/s, at the same time as the 8GB reads at 90MB/s and writes at 25MB/s. Samsung integrates 4 individual 16 gigabit (GB) MLC NAND chips in its 8GB SSD, as well as 4 dual-die packages and 4 quad-die packages of 16Gb NAND for its 16GB and 32GB SSDs correspondingly. In addition, by counting a 32MB DRAM as the barrier and 4-channel system for the novel low concentration SSDs, these solutions are well suited for high-speed reading situations. Though we could be witnessing ASUS bamboo laptops as early as June, there is not even a whisker of an indication of ASUS' bamboo personal units or bamboo LCD screens making it to the retail sector. Providentially for al the bamboo-loving community of users, we might not have to hang around for ASUS bamboo Personal units as Dell has proud one of its very own.

As revealed to the reporters, Michael Dell launched the bamboo laded unit and asserted it to be Dell's least sized computer. The machine is roughly 81 per cent smaller than a customary desktop and utilizes 70 per cent fewer power.
