DEANNE CHEUK INSPIRON MINI: DESIGNER NETBOOK AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE

Desinger netbooks aren’t necessarily known for their capabilities, but there is still a market for them. Much like the Vivienne Tam editions released by HP, Dell has released a limited edition Inspiron Mini designed by Deanne Cheuk. The netbook doesn’t have any fancy specs: it is the regular netbook fare.

The Deanne Cheuk Inspiron Mini is powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor with integrated Intel GMA 500 processor. It has 1 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB SATA hard disk drive. The netbook has a 10 inch display with 1024 x 600 pixels. The only available connectivity option is 802.11 b/g wireless. There is also an HDMI port for transferring video to an external monitor.

Each system in the series will be individually numbered. They are now available at Best Buy for $379.99. The Limited Edition Inspiron Mini runs Windows 7 Starter edition.

STANTUM RELEASES A TABLET PC OUT OF DELL INSPIRON MINI 10

Stantum has unveiled a 10 inch slate PC specifically built out of Dell Inspiron Mini 10. It is not known whether the company plans to mass produce the device because it is described as a ‘proof of concept’. There is, however, a page for ordering an evaluation unit. The slate PC comes with a multi-touch screen that can handle 10 touch points at the same time. The tablet accepts both finger and stylus inputs. It supports Windows 7 with no additional drivers.

The tablet measures just 1.2 inches in thickness and weighs around 2.3 pounds. The 10.1 inch display comes with either 1024 x 600 or 1024 x 576 pixels. There are 2 USB ports. Other features include Bluetooth and WiFi.

It will be interesting to see whether the tablet would do well when it hits the market. But one thing is certain: It will have to be priced aggressively.

DELL INSPIRON 14Z REVIEW

Despite having the designation ‘z’, the Inspiron 14z isn’t probably the thinnest and lightest laptop in its category offering the best battery life, but it does have some impressive features.

Dell Inspiron 14z (Cherry Red) Specifications:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CULV SU7300 (1.3GHz, 800MHz, 3MB)
Operating system: Windows 7 Premium (64-bit)
RAM: 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
Storage: 250GB 5400rpm HDD
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
Display: 14.0” HD (1366x768) WLED Display and webcam
The machine weighs around 4lbs. Price as configured: $839.

Build and Design
In design and looks the Inspiron 14z is similar to the Inspiron 14. There are, nevertheless, some differences between the two models. The 14z is more power efficient than the Inspiron 14 due to its CULV processor and WLED display.

The notebook is made of relatively thin plastic, but build quality is good. The display lid, however, does suffer from minor flex: you can create ripples on the screen by pressing the back of the display. Other than that, there are no major problems with the build quality.

The bottom of the notebook provides easy access panels for the hard drive and RAM.

Screen and Speakers
The 14-inch display has 1366x768 pixels. Colors are good but contrast isn’t very impressive. The WLED backlighting is even and provides a wide range of brightness settings. Horizontal viewing angles are pretty good, but vertical viewing angles are average.

The stereo speakers are located beneath the front edge of the notebook palmrests so you will only hear a muffled sound when you put the laptop on your lap. Put the device on a desk and you should be able to hear better audio. Sound quality isn’t particularly good or bad. Audiophiles will definitely find a pair of headphones useful and the headphone jack produces clear, distortion free sound.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard has full-sized keys. It is very firm and shows absolutely no flex at all. The only problem with the keyboard is probably the lack of backlighting.
The touchpad is a Synaptics model using Dell’s proprietary touchpad drivers. It supports multi-touch controls. Sensitivity is good with very little lag.

Ports and Features
Port selection is average for a notebook of this size. There are 3 USB ports, HDMI video out port, VGA, a multi-format memory card reader, Ethernet and a standard 8xCD/DVD burner with dual-layer support. The Inspiron 14z doesn’t have an ExpressCard slot, eSATA or FireWire.

Performance
The Inspiron 14z runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo CULV SU7300 processor with Intel X4500HD integrated graphics. Performance is good for daily activities such as surfing the web and processing Office documents. You can also make simple edits to your photos or videos.

The CULV processor is highly power efficient but it does affect the overall performance of the notebook. That said, the machine is still good enough to serve your basic needs as a family notebook. But if you want to play the latest 3D games or run high-end photo editing applications, this is not the laptop to buy. The price tag, too, seem a bit odd. The Inspiron 14z starts at $799 whereas the Studio 14z, which offers much better performance, starts at $699.

Battery
The Inspiron 14z has a 6-cell 48.8 WHr battery. At around 6 hours, battery life is impressive for a notebook of this size, but still it falls short of Dell’s promise of 66% better battery life.

Heat and Noise
The cooling system does a good job and keeps the heat and noise levels well within normal limits.

Conclusion
The Dell Inspiron 14z delivers reasonable performance and an impressive battery life. This is not a high performance machine, but is good enough to be a convenient notebook for general use. On the flip side, the Inspiron 14z is costlier than the Studio 14z which offers much better performance at an affordable price.

Pros:
Impressive battery life
Nice design
Good keyboard

Cons:
Average performance
No eSATA, FireWire or ExpressCard slot
Keyboard lacks backlighting

DELL INSPIRON 11Z REVIEW

Dell has used the ultra-low voltage Celeron 723 and the GS45 chipset on its new netbook, the Inspiron 11z. The Celeron processor when paired with X4500 integrated graphics has a definite advantage over the Atom processors common in netbooks.

Dell Inspiron 11z Specifications
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, 32-bit)
Processor: Intel Celeron 723 (1.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB Cache)
Chipset: Intel GS45 + ISH9M chipset
Display: 11.6" WXGA LED-backlit display at 1366x768
Graphics: Intel X4500 Integrated Graphics
Memory: 2GB DDR2-800 SDRAM (1 Slot)
Weight: 3.05lbs

Build and Design
The Dell Inspiron 11z comes with a plain, black screen cover and chassis. The machine looks neat and elegant with no superfluous features inside. The build quality seems average, but the chassis still feels durable. Dell has placed the user-accessible components just under the keyboard. You can easily upgrade or replace components by removing the keyboard.

Screen and Speakers
The Inspiron 11z has a 11.6 inch screen with 1366x768 pixels. The LED backlit display is great with good color reproduction. Horizontal viewing angles are excellent, but vertical viewing angles aren’t very good. Display has good viewing brightness, but outdoor viewing can still be limited.
The speakers sound reasonably well. Peak volumes are good for watching a movie or listening to music.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The Inspiron 11z has a nearly full-size keyboard which is very comfortable to type on. The all-in-one touchpad comes with multitouch controls, but unfortunately it doesn’t work well. While this is a problem that can be solved by using an external mouse, it takes away from the portability of the netbook.

Ports and Features
There are three USB ports, audio jacks, an SDHC card slot, HDMI and LAN connector. Dell supplies a very good power adapter with this netbook. While it will last longer than the average netbook adapters, it is pretty big.

Performance
The Dell Inspiron 11 has a Celeron processor, which is better than the Atom processors found on most netbooks. Performance is strictly OK for most tasks around the house. You can surf the net, process MS Office documents and watch videos.

Battery Life
The Inspiron 11z has a 3-cell battery. At 3.5 hours, the battery life is average.

Pros:
Integrated X4500 graphics with HDMI out
Good screen
Nice keyboard

Cons:
Bad touchpad
Weak performance from the Celeron 723

FIRST LOOK AT DELL INSPIRON 14

The soon-to-be-launched Dell Inspiron 14 is aimed at students who want a good general purpose notebook at an affordable price. Inspiron 14 will be slightly heavier than the Studio 14z. There will be an optional built-in Blu-ray drive and dedicated graphics. You can purchase the notebook in its base configuration for less than $500.

Overview of specs and features:

Processors: Intel Celeron, Intel Pentium Dual Core, or Intel Core 2 Duo processors
Chipset: Intel GM45
Memory: Up to 8GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Storage: SATA Hard Drive options up to 500GB capacity and up to 7200RPM speed
Optical Drives: DVD+/-RW or optional Blu-Ray Disc
Graphics: Intel GMA X4500HD (standard) or ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 512MB (GDDR2)
Display (standard): 14.0 inch HD 1366 x 768; 14.0 inch HD+ 1600 x 900 (optional)

Ports and Slots
There will be 3 USB 2.0 ports, VGA, RJ45, ExpressCard/34 slot and 7-in-1 memory reader, Ethernet and Wireless LAN. Bluetooth, webcam and microphone are optional.

Build and Design
In design, the Inspiron 14 looks like an enlarged version of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 10 netbooks. The keyboard feels firm with good key spacing. The touchpad too looks like a larger version of the touchpad found on the Dell Mini 9 and 10. Responsiveness is good; so is tracking.

Inspiron 14 will be available in a choice of colors including, Obsidian Black, Alpine White, Cherry Red, Ice Blue, Promise Pink, Jade Green, and Passion Purple. The starting prize will be $449 way below the $649 starting price of Studio 14z. Sure, Studio 14z has a better processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, FireWire and eSATA.

On the other hand, the Inspiron 14 too has some impressive features in the form of an optional 1600 x 900 screen, optional Blu-ray drive, and optional ATI discrete graphics. And like the Studio 14z, Inspiron 14 will also offer FailSafe theft prevention.

DELL INSPIRON 15 REVIEW

The Dell Inspiron 15 is a budget-friendly notebook that offers reasonably good performance.

Base System Configuration
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 2.00GHz Processor (1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
Display: 15.6" 1366x768 16:9 Glossy Display
Graphics: Intel X4500 Integrated Graphics
Memory: 3GB DDR2 800MHz RAM (2GB + 1GB)
Hard Disk Drive: 320GB 5400RPM HDD

Build and Design
The design is attractive, but build quality is average. Since all internal components are easily accessible, the user will not have much difficulty upgrading this notebook.

The glossy 1366x768 display is average with poor viewing angles. Speaker quality is good for a budget notebook. But you will still need headphones for enjoying music or movies.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard layout is good and it offers good support. You will love typing on this keyboard. The touchpad gives excellent traction. Speed and accuracy are also good.

Ports and Features
Port selection is lacking in many areas. There are 3 USB ports, VGA, LAN and an ExpressCard/34 slot, but there is no HDMI or eSATA.

Performance
Boot times are fast, but with the low-end T4200 Intel processor performance is below average. You will still have no problem performing basic tasks like typing documents, watching HD movies, listening to music or editing photos. And if you upgrade the processor, performance should get a quick boost.

Battery
Battery life is below average. Despite having the 48 Wh battery, the laptop can’t stay on for more than two and half hours.

Conclusion
The Dell Inspiron 15 is mid-size budget notebook that delivers reasonably good performance at a highly affordable price. Basic configurations start as low as $379. It isn’t quite the best notebook in the market but is still a good choice for those working on a budget.

Pros:

Good looks
You can easily upgrade all components
Great cooling system
Good touchpad buttons

Cons:
Poor battery life
Poor selection of ports

DELL INSPIRON MINI 9 QUICK REVIEW

The red just got darker - DELL Inspiron Mini 9

DELL Inspiron Mini 9Dell follows the lead of Asus coming up with its offering to the Netbook market, the Inspiron Mini 9. While this unit doesn’t boast any radically different features, it does offer more customization options than most competitors. For as little as $ 349, you can get a Mini 9 with 4-8GB storage space, 512MB RAM, a lower resolution web cam and Ubuntu Linux OS. If you’re willing to pay an additional $ 150, you could buy 16GB storage with 1GB RAM and Windows XP. Throw in a few more dollars and you can get an internal Bluetooth antenna.

The design imitates the Asus 9-inch Eee PC while being slightly slimmer and the unit comes in glossy black and white, which like most such exteriors attracts finger prints almost immediately. The same material covers the palm rest space while matte finishes have been used on the keyboard and the bottom. The build quality is solid and the exteriors manage to resist minor scratches. The use of magnesium alloy to reinforce the inside of the chassis makes the Mini 9 more resistant to daily usage.
Open it up and you find that Dell has managed fairly well to provide a satisfactory keypad even though they have made a few changes. For all that, touch typing still won’t be possible. If this is your primary laptop, an external keyboard is recommended. Dell has also moved the function keys to the middle and done away with the F1 –F12 keys, which is a bit frustrating for those of us used to the shortcuts possible with those keys. The Synaptics touchpad is of a good size, relatively speaking, and is amazingly sensitive and responsive. Speakers, located below the screen do a decent job with video clips and system sounds though a certain amount of distortion was obvious at maximum volume.

The glossy LED backlit display comes with a native resolution of 1,024x600 pixels and provides good horizontal and acceptable vertical viewing angles. Outdoors, customers might experience slightly annoying glare issues. On the sides, the Mini offers three USB ports, a multi-card reader, audio jacks, VGA and Ethernet/LAN.

Like most Intel Atom based netbooks, the Mini 9 tends to heat up with the Wi-Fi card spot getting the hottest. The lack of a fan also contributes to this. With normal usage, though, the unit doesn’t get uncomfortably hot and turning off the wireless card takes care of the hottest spot.
In spite of a 4 cell battery, there doesn’t seem to be a significant increase in battery life. Under normal usage, with the wireless card turned on and the backlit display at maximum, the Mini offered 3 hours and 37 minutes.

The 1.6 GHz N270 Intel Atom CPU ensures decent performance for normal usage but then the same can be said for most other net books as well. The bottom line being that the Mini doesn’t really stand out from the competitions’ offering. Buy it if you’re willing to accept its limitations.

Price: $349 (Standard)

DELL INTROS 15.6-INCH INSPIRON 15 LAPTOPS

I'll be up front with you, this is not "breaking news" but seeing how the economy is in the dumps I'm guessing that there are more than a few readers of this blog who would be interested in a $600 notebook system from Dell.

DELL INSPIRON 1525

The lifespan of a Dell Inspiron laptop is usually quite substantial, sometimes to the point where it becomes long in the tooth. Thus it's unusual to be mourning the loss of the Dell Inspiron 1520 after only six months on the market. Stepping into the spotlight to replace it is the revamped Dell Inspiron 1525. While there's no miracle weight loss here, the 6-pound frame is nearly half a pound lighter than the 1520's, and the tapering design gives it a slimmer silhouette (similar to that of the Dell XPS M1530). The keyboard is the same full-size model found on Dell's other Inspiron and XPS laptops. While the keyboard is not our favorite, because of its tapered keys that may not offer enough surface area for chubby fingers, its feels solid and responsive. Above the keyboard sits a row of media control buttons. With 2GB of RAM and a 2.0GHz T7250 CPU, the Dell Inspiron 1525 offered no surprises on the performance front. The 15.4-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1280x800 native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size.
All in all with many surveys made to choose the best laptop for this year Dell Inspiron 1525 was always on the top of the lists and I can recommend this laptop if you are in need of an unique laptop.

32GB INSPIRON 9 NETBOOK COMING

dell_red-mini-9 dell_pink-mini-9

When Dell made its debut into the netbook market (being one of the last major PC manufacturers to do so) they won reviews with their cute systems that seemed to fix everything we were missing in the Asus. Although the Asus has sold more units worldwide Dell has garnered quite a bit of press for its systems.

And now they're at it again. Japan has just nabbed a 32GB SSD Inspiron 9 which will be going for ¥54,980 or about $565. What's even greater are the color choices. The Japanese will have the option of Red, or Pink.

As for a stateside or worldwide release, that is unclear at the moment, but I'm guessing Dell is probably going to bring them here sometime in December or Springish of next year.
