They call it the Extreme Desktop Replacement Notebook, which aims at dominating the PCs with its performance. Powered by a strong CPU, a great screen, these laptops are something to watch out for. Lets grill it through our tests.
Design
The product is as sturdy as it can possibly be, the frames, and the body, both are strong enough to survive that accidental slip. It weighs around 3 kgs, which is a bit high in comparison to other notebooks available. The notebook is an all-plastic feature, and sometimes you can hear distinct creaking noises, which are not very disturbing. Considering the price at which it retails, the design factor is good enough. The left of the laptop has the modem, Lan port, VGA port, S-Video, HDMI ports. 3 USB ports are provided, and the notebook is equipped with bluetooth, eSATA, fingerprint lock and a 1.3 MP web-camera.
The display is a 15.4” WSXGA+ Widescreen LCD which offers a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. The screen has only one con, its reflects the background light a lot, and tends to be an eye-sore. The color reproduction of the display is above average.
Performance
The notebook runs on the high-performance Intel Core-2-Duo E6600, 8600M GT, 160GB 5400 rpm hard disk and 2Gb RAM. The notebook can easily handle all the business applications, and nearly all the recent games at medium-high settings. The laptop scored 3209 in 3DMarks 06, and 5173 in PCMark 05. The abundant hard-disk is sufficient for all your storage needs at this moment, and a DVD+r drive is provided for the situations when backing up is crucial. The graphics card, although a good one, poses a bottleneck to the processor and the RAM available.
Conclusion
The product is very competitively priced, and with the features it offers, like the high speed processor, good amount of RAM, and ample hard disk space, its a steal! The product gets a beating in the graphics category, and a better sub-system would have increased its performance a lot. The battery backup is low too, with the product not going beyond 1 hour under full load. The laptop is bundled with MX 518, which is more of a gift than an accessory.
Pros
+ Good processor, disk and memory subsystem
+ Sturdy design
Cons
- Poor battery life
- The graphics sub-system could have been improved.
