TOSHIBA SATELLITE A205-6808 REVIEW

The Toshiba Satallite A205-6808 is a laptop with a killer price, and a HD-DVD drive to boot. Featuring attractive casing and a decent set of features, its more of a student notebook than anything else.

Design

The design is very ergonomic, with round edges, a blue black glossy exterior and silver insides. This styling has a sort of a trademark for Toshiba notebooks, more like a signature. A remarkable thing is the stability of the display, which sits on a single hinged line rather than a 2 hinged one. The overall feel of the notebook is flashy, owing to the sparkling logos in every corner. The screen is a 15.4 inch with a maximum resolution of 1280x800. The TruBrite screen finish makes movie watching a pleasurable experience because of the awesome color correctness and quality. The glossy surface counts for some reflectivity, but thats very little, like a minor flaw. The keyset suffers from bad quality and loud keys, flex over the surface and unergonomic balance. The touchpad makes up for the loser keypad, with a broad touch space and mouse buttons. A plethora of connectivity options have been provided which includes S-Video, VGA, headphone/MIC jacks, 4 USB 2.0, Firewire, Express card slot, Ethernet, modem and WiFi.

Performance

The notebook runs on an Intel Core-2-Duo T5450 1.66GHz processor, 2Gb RAM, 200GB hard drive and onboard Intel X3100. The performance was decent, with day to day applications running smoothly. We could easily multi-task among web browser, media player and office suite without trouble. The PCMark 05 scores were decent, but the notebook suffered badly in 3DMarks. The low 3DMarks made it clear that this notebook is not meant for gaming, not even casual gaming. At the most, you would be able to play a little Age of Empires or some low-en previous gen games.

Overall
A decent notebook for the price at which it retails, it gave us average performance, nothing spectacular. The battery was again a disappointment , with only one and a half hours of backup time. There are many notebooks in the same segment which pull the plug on this edition from Toshiba, just for a grand more.

Pros
+ Good design
+ Decent connectivity options

Cons
- Average performance
- Poor battery
