ASUS EEE PC 1000HE QUICK REVIEW

Simplicity at it's best - Asus EEE PC 1000HE

Asus EEE PC 1000HEAsus, the creator of the Netbook market, is back with its latest offering – the improved, redesigned Eee PC 1000 HE, now at an affordable $400! “The Other essential Travel Companion” reads the print advertisement, drawing attention to its prime USP - 9.5 hours of battery life, ideal for long trips.

Let’s take a quick tour of the product: 1.66 GHz, Intel Atom N280 processor, 1 GB RAM and 160GB HDD make up the core configuration. A 10-inch WSVGA display with a native resolution of 1024x600 pixels, 3 USB ports, 1 VGA out, Kensington lock slot, Ethernet 10/100, 802. 11b/g/n/Bluetooth wireless and 1.3MP web cam are included in the specs list. On Prime Processor tests, the 1000HE was only second to the Sony VaioTZ. On overall performance tests, it earned fourth spot after the Sony Vaio TZ, Asus N10 and Acer Aspire One.

The first question that arises is whether or not the new processor provides a noticeable improvement over the PC 1000 which came with the standard Intel Atom Processor. The disappointing answer is no! While performance continues to be great for average usage, there isn’t a remarkable difference in the performance levels. And though the processor supports a newer GN40 chipset, this version comes with the standard Intel 945 chipset.

The design on first glance appears to be similar to its predecessor, however, on opening the cover, you find that the keyboard is noticeably improved with a glossy finish and wider spaces between keys make it as good as, if not better than the HP Mini 1000 keypad. The touchpad is also different in that it allows dual finger control, though they seem to be slightly less sensitive to quick movements. The presence of handy keys below the display, allow shortcuts ranging from increasing the CPU speed to adjusting the display resolution. Attention has been paid to the build quality which is very good and minimizes creaks and flex.

The display is remarkably easy on the eye and vertical and horizontal angle viewing remains true to a great extent. The obvious downside is the low screen resolution. The speakers though loud enough within a small-sized room can get somewhat drowned in larger areas. The headphone option works best if you’re someone that likes to listen to music on full blast.

To sustain its claims of 9.5 hours of battery life, the model uses a significantly larger sized battery which in turn adds to the weight of the unit (1.45 kgs). That said, the battery life offered (in power saving mode with the wireless turned off and the brightness reduced) is the longest when compared to both the previous Asus Eee PC 1000 and the rest of the competition, at an attractive starting price.
