HOT SPOT SAFETY

Most modern laptops are Wi-Fi enabled making it possible for you to wirelessly connect to the internet in a hot spot. The problem with using your laptop in a Wi-Fi hot spot is that it makes your data vulnerable to hacking. So what are the precautions you need to take before entering a hot spot?

Install a Firewall
Before you use your laptop in hot spots you need to make sure that you have installed the Firewall software. Bear in mind that hot spots aren’t secure access points to the internet. It is your responsibility to take measures that would ensure your security.

Disable Wi-Fi Ad-hoc Mode
When you are in a hot spot, your laptop may pick up other Wi-Fi networks that you do not want to access or allow access to your laptop. To avoid this situation, disable ad-hoc mode before entering a hot spot. By disabling this option you can prevent your laptop from making instant network connections without your knowledge.

Use a VPN
Use your company VPN if you need to connect to a corporate network.

Disable File and Printer Sharing
When you use your laptop in a hot spot, you really don’t need to have the file and printer sharing enabled. You will become vulnerable to hacking if you leave this option enabled.

Turn It Off
Turn off your wireless devices if you don’t want to be connected. You can still continue working on your files. If you are using a Centrino-based system, you will be able to turn off Wi-Fi using a manual switch.

Be a discreet worker
Be discreet when working in a public place. Don’t let other people view your work and don’t tell them that your device is Wi-Fi enabled. Mobile workers should try and avoid attracting a lot of attention to themselves and their devices.

Password Protect Your File
Protect your important files with password. Several software programs are available for this purpose.
