The HP Pavilion dv3 is a slick budget-friendly notebook. At 4.7 pounds it is a portable alternative to the more powerful but slightly heavier Gateway UC7807u.
The dv3 is powered by the AMD 2.3 GHz Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-84 CPU. It comes with 4GB of RAM. While Gateway UC7807u does well in the performance department, dv3 stands its ground in the stamina department. At 5.5 hours, the battery life is great. Another plus point of this laptop is its amazing display screen.
There are enough connectivity options in the forms of HDMI and VGA video outputs, two USB 2.0 ports, one hybrid USB/eSATA port (ideal for high-speed data jockies), a PC Express Card slot, a flash-card reader, ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. There is also a slot-fed DVD burner. The hard disk drive has 320 GB capacity.
The keyboard is good. Despite this being a low-end model, HP has taken the trouble to accommodate the touch-sensitive shortcut buttons on this keyboard. On the flip side, the function keys are barely visible.
The touchpad feels nice but its multitouch drivers are more than enough to give you some serious headaches. Don’t be surprised if you feel the need to turn the drivers off altogether.
Like other HP models this too comes with some preinstalled applications. While most of them are totally unnecessary some applications like the HP Advisor bar and ‘PC Health & Security’ button are really handy.
Conclusion
This laptop has enough plus points to make it worth considering. Performance is strictly OK. Battery life is good. Display is great. The only problem most users will have is with the touchpad.
