Acer, it seems, is keen on becoming one of the first companies to launch a laptop running Google Chrome operating system. Chrome is a netbook-oriented operating system from Google. According to a report in DigiTimes Acer is planning to release a netbook running Chrome in the second half of 2010. Pre-release versions of Chrome are already available for download and Google says that the OS will be fully ready for general use next year.
Acer was also one of the first few companies to release a netbook running Google’s Android which is a cell phone-oriented OS. Unlike Android, Chrome is a web-focused operating system capable of running web-applications such as Gmail, Google Docs or Zoho Office.
Acer’s Android netbook was basically a dual boot system that could run either Windows or Android. The Acer Chrome netbook may also come with a dual boot option, even though Google is trying to position Chrome as an independent OS that can stand on its own.
So will Chrome be able to rival Windows someday? Well, that is very unlikely at least in the near future, but Chrome may be a good alternative to existing web-based solutions such as Splashtop or Hyperspace.
