NORHTEC LAUNCHES COMPUTER-IN-A-KEYBOARD GECKO SURFBOARD

Asus has been working on a ‘keyboard computer’ for a while. Now word is that NorhTec, makers of the low cost Gecko EduBook Netbook is also planning to release a similar device that would pack a computer inside a keyboard.

The Gecko Surfboard, as it would be called, will have a low power x86-compatible chipset that integrates processor, graphics and memory functions. The Gecko Surfboard is very power efficient and would consume just 5 watts of power. NorhTec says that the Surfboard is about the same size as a typical keyboard, but it is a bit thick.

The Surfboard will be able to run Linux, Windows CE or Windows XP. While the Asus Eee keyboard is a multimedia device with an HDMI port, the Gecko Surfboard is different. It is meant to be a low cost primary computer. It has a VGA output port for connecting to a monitor. And if no monitor is available you can plug in a TV using the composite jacks. Other features include Ethernet, headphone, mic and USB ports. The Gecko Surfboard will cost around $99.
