Asus F9Dc is an ultra-portable from ASUS, which has a decent configuration to boot. A great pacakge on the whole, we put it through our tests and get mixed results.
Design
The overall design and the color scheme is average. You can call it a bit bulky, and the bezel around the screen gives it that look along with the weight. The color scheme includes black with silver lining, and the looks are average again. The build is solid, but some components, like the screen hinges and the optical drive tray are loose. A 12.1” WXGA screen sits comfortably inside, and it has a good color reproduction and brightness. The only Con of the screen is the vertical viewing angle, which creates a problem. The connectivity options are quite good, with 3 USB ports, VGA, HDMI, Memory card reader, Express card reader, headphone/MIC jacks and Ethernet. The Firewire port is missing, which is a bad exception. The keyboard has a small set of keys which might be a nuisance to some of you.
Performance
Powered by an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 processor running at 1.8Ghz, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 120GB hard drive and 8400M GT GPU, this notebook gave a mixed performance in all our tests. It gave a 1,100 in 3DMark 06, which makes it good enough for most latest games at medium but hardcore gamers should miss this one. There was absolutely no problem in multi-tasking and running various day-to-day applications and business tasks. The performance is decent enough for the price at which this notebook retails. The battery is very poor, and it only lasts something around 2 hours at medium usage. This is a big Con for a machine of this kind, a definite flaw.
Conclusion
All said and done, the Asus F9DC is a good notebook for the performance which it offers for that price. Its not the best, but it is one of the great priced, decent ones which are easy on the wallet and superb all over. Complete with a carry-bag and a decent packaging, this can be considered if you are a college student with regular requirements and college stuff.
Pros
+Good performance-price ratio
+Nice packaging
Cons
-Bulky in design
-Battery life is very poor.
