ASUS Eee PC 1002HA REVIEW

ASUS Eee PC 1002HA
I don't know why I'm so interested in netbooks even though they never really amaze me. I guess its because they are something different. Well here is a small review of the latest and the most looked forward netbook for the rest of the year.

The 1002ha is a mark improvement over its previous siblings, and a lot of the features that made it into its more expensive cousin the S101 are present here.

Design

The design of the 100HA is a mark improvement. With dimensions of 10.4 x 7.1 x 1.1 and weighing in at 2.6 pounds (3.2 with ac adapter) this netbook fits squarely into its rivals and the only other netbook in its class that is thinner (by a mere .1 inch) is the HP Mini 1000.

The netbook also includes a 10 inch screen which is pretty good for basic computing. As I've said before the only major drawback is that it might be a little tedious to do certain tasks on a screen of that resolution but basic computing and even watching a film or two is pretty fine.

The keyboard is is very spacious and provides great comfort for long typing regimes. The only drawback is the shift key which is placed to the right of the arrow keys. The touch pad is also one that is inherited from its classier cousin the S101. It includes brushed metal but instead of the left and right buttons one single button has been used in its place.

As for ports you're getting 3 USB 2.0 ports and a VGA, 4 in 1 card reader and Ethernet port. The USB ports are located on either sides of the system while the latter three find their place on the systems back (which can be quite inconvenient).

Performance

The 1002HA is a mark improvment over similar netbooks and provides some pretty decent numbers in reference to performance. Video conferencing is a snap (and yes a web cam is included), so is web surfing, music playback (via WMP) and even watching DVD's. Programs such as Microsoft Office perform just fine on the tiny Atom 1.6GHz processor.

The only caution is that games are not going to do well on the integrated chip set so you might want to save WoW for another machine.

In terms of Wi-Fi the system performs pretty well. Hulu and other bandwidth demanding websites performs without a hitch over Wi-Fi. The only bummer is that the next generation of WiFi (n) is not offered, but that did not seem to decrease scores.

Battery

This is probably the only thing that will be make or break for the system. The included 2 cell battery does 3 hours and 39 minutes on a full charge. That might sound dull but when you take into account that this is a 2 cell battery you can easily see how a 3 or six cell battery could blow away the records.

Summary

So to sum it up, teh 1002HA is a mark improvement and considering its $499price tag there isn't much more you could ask for from a system of this value and design.
